That Whistling Sound at Cold Start: What It Means for Your European or Japanese Car

If you’ve noticed a high-pitched whistle from under the hood when you start your car on a chilly morning, you’re not alone. Many owners of Mercedes-Benz, BMW, Audi, Porsche, VW, Volvo, Jaguar, Lexus, Toyota, and Honda vehicles—including hybrids—hear this sound at cold start. It usually fades after a minute or two, once the engine warms up.
In most cases, this is normal. Modern engines run a “cold start” program that adjusts fuel mixture and idle speed to warm up the catalytic converter quickly. That can cause a temporary change in exhaust tone or a slight whistle from the intake or turbocharger system. If the sound goes away completely and the car drives fine, there’s likely nothing to worry about.
However, if the whistle persists, gets louder, or is accompanied by a loss of power or warning lights, it could point to a vacuum leak, a failing turbo seal, or a worn belt tensioner. These issues are more common in high-mileage European and Japanese cars, especially those with turbochargers.
