That Used EV Battery Fear? New Data Says Worry About This Instead.

When shopping for a pre-owned electric vehicle, the big battery pack under the floor usually tops the worry list. But fresh data from UK warranty provider Warrantywise tells a different story: the high-voltage battery didn't even crack the top five most common repair requests. Instead, everyday gremlins like dodgy sensors, sticky central locking, and worn suspension parts are the real headaches for EV owners.
Topping the list were general electrical faults, think sensors and locking systems, with average repair bills around £810 to £900 (roughly $1,085 to $1,205). But some claims soared past £3,000 ($4,020), and a few even hit £4,000 ($5,350). Suspension components, particularly wishbones, came next, averaging over £1,200 ($1,600) per fix, with one claim cresting £4,100 ($5,490).
The extra weight of an EV's battery means suspension takes a beating, even without a traditional engine or gearbox.
The only EV-specific part to make the top five was the on-board charger. While the average repair ran £2,160 ($2,890), the priciest single claim hit a staggering £10,455 ($14,000) - a reminder that although these failures aren't common, they can be brutally expensive when they happen.
Meanwhile, the high-voltage battery everyone fears? It didn't crack the top five. When battery failures did occur, average repair requests exceeded £6,400 ($8,570), but such events were comparatively rare, likely because modern EV batteries are more durable than popular belief suggests and often carry longer factory warranties.
7% between 2024 and 2025, but that's partly due to inflation, labor, and parts prices, not necessarily worsening reliability. While this data only covers vehicles under warranty, it's a clear signal that the battery anxiety driving so many used-EV conversations might be overblown.
The real money pits? The same old electrical and suspension gremlins that have frustrated drivers for decades.
