That Gurgling Sound After Parking? Your Mercedes May Still Have Air in the System

If you own a C250 and recently had the coolant water pipe replaced, you might notice a strange gurgling or water-rushing noise after shutting off the engine, especially following a long drive. It’s a sound that can be heard both inside and outside the car, and while it may be alarming, it’s a common sign of trapped air in the cooling system.

The good news? There’s usually a fix that doesn’t require another trip to the shop.

Even if the coolant level looks normal and hasn’t dropped, an air pocket can still hide somewhere in the system. Opening the reservoir cap and letting the engine idle often works for minor bubbles, but not always. Some Mercedes models, including the C250, have a dedicated bleed screw, typically located near the thermostat housing or on the upper radiator hose.

Without using that screw, the trapped air may never fully escape, leaving you with persistent gurgling that can also cause inconsistent heater performance or eventual overheating.

To properly bleed the system, start with a cold engine. Remove the reservoir cap, locate the bleed screw (check your owner’s manual or online forums for the exact spot), and open it slightly. Run the engine with the heater set to full heat and fan on low. As the thermostat opens, coolant will circulate and push air out through the bleed screw.

Keep adding coolant to the reservoir until a steady stream of fluid (no air bubbles) comes from the screw, then close it. Let the engine cool, recheck the level, and repeat once more.

If the noise persists after a thorough bleed, you might be dealing with a failing water pump, a collapsed hose, or a small leak that introduces air during driving. At that point, it’s best to bring the car to a professional for a pressure test. But in most cases, a careful bleeding with the factory screw solves the problem, no guesswork required.
