That Glowing Check Engine Light? Here’s What It Really Means

When the Check Engine light pops on your dashboard, it’s easy to panic, or ignore it. But according to Ashot Yeritsyan, executive director of partner relations at SberLeasing, that little orange glow can mean anything from a faulty sensor to a serious mechanical issue. The key takeaway?
Don’t brush it off, even if your car seems to be running fine. The light is your car’s way of saying something’s off, and the problem could get worse if left unchecked.
Yeritsyan explains that the most common mistake drivers make is assuming no news is good news. Just because the engine isn’t sputtering or making strange noises doesn’t mean everything’s okay. The issue might be minor, like a loose gas cap or a worn oxygen sensor, but it could also signal trouble with the fuel system or engine components.
The only way to know for sure is to run a diagnostic. If the light is steady and the car feels normal, you can drive carefully to a safe spot and check fluid levels, engine temperature, and any odd smells.
But if that light starts flashing, or you notice power loss, jerking, heavy vibration, burning smells, smoke, or overheating, stop driving immediately. Continuing could cause major damage to the engine or other expensive parts. Yeritsyan stresses that most check-engine issues develop slowly, which is why sticking to routine maintenance, oil changes, quality fuel, fresh spark plugs, is your best defense.
A little attention today can save you a big repair bill tomorrow.
