Tesla's Bid to Dodge Headlight Recall Denied by Federal Regulators

Tesla's Bid to Dodge Headlight Recall Denied by Federal Regulators

Federal safety regulators have shut down Tesla’s attempt to sidestep a formal recall for a headlight issue affecting thousands of vehicles. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) rejected the automaker’s petition, which argued that the problem, where headlights can temporarily go dark, did not pose an unreasonable safety risk.

The denial means Tesla must now notify owners and offer a free fix.

The issue centers on a software glitch that can cause the low-beam headlights to shut off unexpectedly while driving at night. Tesla had requested an exemption from the recall process, claiming the defect was minor and that a software update already rolling out would address it.

But NHTSA disagreed, stating that any loss of illumination on dark roads is a clear safety hazard that demands a formal recall notice. The agency’s decision follows a preliminary investigation that found nearly 3,000 complaints related to the problem.

For Boca Auto Care drivers, this serves as a reminder that even cutting-edge electric cars aren’t immune to technical hiccups. While Tesla owners will get the update from the manufacturer, local shops like ours are ready to assist with any other headlight or electrical issues, whether it’s a bulb replacement, alignment, or diagnostics.

The recall covers certain Model 3 and Model Y vehicles from the 2020-2023 model years, and Tesla is expected to begin notifying owners in the coming weeks.
