Suzuki’s Rare Mid-Engine Kei Car Packs Gullwing Doors and a Tiny Turbo

Suzuki’s Rare Mid-Engine Kei Car Packs Gullwing Doors and a Tiny Turbo

, with changing import rules and even presidential interest fueling a surge in demand. A week after a 1993 Autozam AZ-1 sold for a staggering $63,000, another rare Japanese micro-sports car has appeared at auction: the Suzuki Cara. It’s the lesser-known twin of the Mazda Autozam, and it’s now up for grabs with just 20,000 miles on the clock.

The Cara shares its bones with the AZ-1 but is far rarer—only 533 examples were built compared to Mazda’s 4,392. Under the rear hatch sits a 657 cc turbocharged three-cylinder engine producing a modest 64 horsepower and 63 lb-ft of torque, sent to the rear wheels through a five-speed manual.

While the power figures are tiny, the car’s mid-engine layout and gullwing doors give it the look and feel of a full-blown exotic, just shrunk down to Kei-car proportions.

This 1993 model wears its original Classic Red paint with gray accents and still has its air conditioning and cassette stereo. The cabin features fixed-back bucket seats with red inserts and a three-spoke steering wheel. Bidding on this Suzuki wraps up in less than a week on Bring a Trailer, making it a prime opportunity for collectors looking to snag a rare piece of Japanese automotive history before prices climb even higher.
