Subaru's Third Hybrid Effort Finally Feels Like a Real Subaru

Subaru has tried hybrid powertrains twice before, and neither attempt impressed buyers. The first added weight and complexity for minimal fuel gains, while the plug-in follow-up offered a short electric range and ate into cargo space. Now, the 2026 Crosstrek Hybrid marks the third attempt, and early reports suggest the automaker has finally gotten it right.

1-kWh battery, producing 194 horsepower, up from 180 in the non-hybrid version. 4 seconds, a modest improvement over the standard model. The hybrid system eliminates the low-speed throttle surge common in gas Crosstreks, providing smooth electric power up to about 18 mph before the engine joins in.

7 inches of ground clearance, and X-MODE settings remain unchanged.

The battery sits under the cargo floor, reducing space from 19.9 to 18.6 cubic feet. The hybrid uses a reworked eCVT with six simulated gears. Unlike other Crosstreks built in Indiana, the hybrid is assembled in Gunma, Japan.

Two trims are offered: Sport Hybrid starting at $35,415 and Limited Hybrid. That's roughly $2,000 more than a comparably equipped gas Crosstrek and well above the Toyota Corolla Cross Hybrid's starting price of about $28,995, which also offers 196 horsepower and all-wheel drive.

EPA ratings come in at 36 mpg combined, up from 29 mpg for the non-hybrid, but still below the Corolla Cross's 42 mpg.

The Crosstrek Hybrid costs more and trails its rival in efficiency, but it keeps the brand's off-road character intact while smoothing out the driving experience. After a decade of missed attempts, this version finally delivers a hybrid that still behaves like a Subaru first.
