Subaru Recalls Over 540,000 SUVs - The Fix Is a Sticker You Stick On Yourself

Subaru Recalls Over 540,000 SUVs - The Fix Is a Sticker You Stick On Yourself

Subaru has issued a recall covering more than 541,000 SUVs, but the problem isn’t under the hood. It’s on a sticker. The Japanese automaker discovered that the federally required certification labels on several popular models list an incorrect rear axle weight rating. That puts the vehicles out of compliance with Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard 110.

The good news? There’s nothing mechanically wrong with the cars. The fix is so simple that Subaru plans to mail owners a corrected overlay label and instructions to apply it themselves.

The recall affects the 2019-2026 Ascent, 2025-2026 Forester and Forester Hybrid, and the 2026 Crosstrek Hybrid, 541,237 vehicles in total. The issue centers on the Gross Axle Weight Rating (GAWR), which tells drivers the maximum load each axle can safely carry. If owners follow the wrong number, they could overload the rear axle, increasing the risk of a crash.

Subaru says it has no reports of accidents, injuries, or warranty claims tied to the error. Interestingly, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration flagged the problem back in May, prompting Subaru to review its GAWR calculations going all the way back to the 2003 model year.

The remedy is about as low-tech as recalls get. Subaru will mail out corrected labels and step-by-step instructions for owners to stick them over the old ones. Anyone who’d rather not do it themselves can take the vehicle to a dealer for a free installation. Subaru hasn’t disclosed exactly what the incorrect rating said or how much it was off by, but given that only the sticker is wrong, this is one recall where the biggest headache might be peeling off the backing paper.
