Subaru Recalls More Than Half a Million SUVs Over Brake and Fuel Pump Issues

Subaru is pulling over 540,000 of its popular SUVs back to dealerships due to two separate safety concerns. The recall covers certain models of the 2019-2024 Ascent, 2020-2024 Forester, and 2020-2024 Crosstrek vehicles. The Japanese automaker says the issues involve a potential brake fluid leak and a faulty fuel pump that could cause the engine to stall.
According to documents filed with federal safety regulators, the brake problem stems from a master cylinder that may allow fluid to leak into the brake booster. This can lead to reduced braking performance and increase the risk of a crash. Subaru says it will replace the master cylinder and brake booster on affected vehicles free of charge.
The fuel pump issue, meanwhile, involves a defective impeller that could fail, causing the engine to lose power or shut off entirely while driving.
Owners will start receiving notification letters in late March. In the meantime, Subaru recommends that drivers who notice a warning light on the dashboard or a change in brake pedal feel schedule a service appointment immediately. For those with the fuel pump concern, the company advises paying attention to any hesitation or difficulty starting the engine.
The recall comes as Subaru continues to work through supply chain challenges that have delayed parts availability for some previous recalls.
