Subaru Issues Massive Recall for Crosstrek, Forester, and Ascent Models Over Axle Weight Rating Errors

S. after discovering that the gross axle weight ratings (GAWR) on certain models were printed incorrectly. The recall affects 541,237 units of the 2018-2023 Crosstrek, 2019-2023 Forester, and 2019-2023 Ascent. The error lies in the certification label affixed to the driver’s side doorjamb, which lists a higher GAWR than the vehicle’s actual components can safely handle.
The issue came to light during a routine internal audit, when Subaru engineers noticed discrepancies between the printed ratings and the physical limits of the axles and suspension. While no accidents or injuries have been reported related to this problem, an incorrect GAWR could lead owners to overload their vehicles, potentially causing handling issues or tire failure.
Subaru is urging owners to bring their vehicles to dealerships for a free replacement of the certification label.
Dealers will install a corrected label with the proper weight ratings, a fix that takes about 30 minutes. Owners can expect notification letters starting in early May. For those who want to check immediately, Subaru’s recall lookup tool is available on their website. This is the latest in a series of large-scale recalls for the automaker, which has been proactive about addressing labeling and software glitches in recent years.
If you own one of these models, it’s worth checking your doorjamb sticker, and your mailbox.
