Stop Worrying: It’s Fine to Turn On Your A/C Right After Starting the Car

If you’ve ever been told not to crank the air conditioner the moment you start your car, you can forget that advice. According to automotive experts, turning on the A/C immediately after starting the engine does no harm at all—especially in today’s modern vehicles.

Here’s the simple truth: engineers designed your Mercedes, BMW, Audi, Porsche, VW, Volvo, Jaguar, Lexus, Toyota, or Honda to handle exactly that. If it’s 95 degrees in the parking lot and you’re sweating, go ahead and hit the A/C button as soon as you turn the key. Your health and comfort matter more than any old myth about engine wear.

The system is built to work that way.

A few other tips worth knowing:

- Run your A/C once or twice during the winter, even on the heat setting. This keeps the rubber seals from drying out and cracking.

- In summer, you don’t need to let the engine idle to warm up—the oil is already thin enough to circulate quickly.

- In winter, give the engine a minute or two to warm up, especially in turbocharged cars. Thick oil needs a moment to reach all the moving parts.

- After a hard drive, let a turbo engine idle for 30 seconds before shutting it off to let the turbo cool. Non-turbo engines? Just park and turn the key.

One thing that does matter: your cooling system. Too many drivers ignore it until the temperature gauge spikes. A little attention can save you from costly repairs like a blown head gasket or damaged engine parts.

If you have questions about your car’s A/C, cooling system, or just want a peace-of-mind inspection, stop by Boca Auto Care. We’ve been taking care of European and Japanese vehicles right here in Boca Raton since 1989.
