Stellantis 'Do Not Drive' Warning: 225,000 Older Vehicles Still at Risk

Stellantis 'Do Not Drive' Warning: 225,000 Older Vehicles Still at Risk

Stellantis issued a fresh 'Do Not Drive' warning in February 2026 for roughly 225,000 older vehicles. S. history. The recall covers 67 million airbags across tens of millions of vehicles. At least 28 people in the United States have been killed and more than 400 injured by exploding Takata inflators, and millions of affected vehicles are still unrepaired.

A 'Do Not Drive' alert is not a standard recall. It means the risk of serious injury or death is high enough that owners should park the vehicle until the defective inflator is replaced. The chemical propellant in certain Takata inflators degrades over time, especially in hot, humid climates, and a rupture can send metal fragments into the cabin.

Older vehicles face the highest risk. Repairs are free at dealerships, and parts are available for all vehicles currently under 'Do Not Drive' orders.

Stellantis's February 2026 warning covers Dodge Ram 1500, Durango, Dakota, Magnum, Charger and Challenger; Chrysler Aspen and 300; Jeep Wrangler; and Mitsubishi Raider, from model years spanning 2003 through 2016. More than 6.6 million inflators in Stellantis vehicles have already been replaced; about 225,000 remain.

NHTSA also maintains active 'Do Not Drive' orders for certain vehicles across brands including Acura. BMW, Ford. Honda, Infiniti, Mazda, Nissan, Pontiac and Toyota. Test data on those inflators shows a significantly higher rupture risk than other recalled Takata airbags, which is why they carry the stronger warning.

Owners can check their 17-character VIN on NHTSA's free recall lookup tool. If an open Takata recall appears, stop driving the vehicle and call a dealership to schedule the free repair. Stellantis owners can also call 833-585-0144. The Takata crisis started in 2008 and is still claiming lives, so a quick VIN check matters before you drive another mile, or buy a used car from these model years.
