Spy Video Reveals Electric BMW X5 M Testing at the Nürburgring

A camouflaged prototype of the next-generation electric BMW X5 M has been spotted entering the company’s test center at the Nürburgring, signaling that work is well underway on a high-performance EV SUV. The test vehicle, designated G95, appears to have a smaller kidney grille than the regular iX5 60 xDrive, but the heavy disguise may be playing tricks on us.
This is likely an early prototype mixing old and new parts, as the production model isn’t expected until 2028.
The prototype shows a different front bumper with beefier air intakes and extra mesh above the license plate, hinting at additional cooling needs. This isn’t just an M Performance model; it’s the full-fat M variant. BMW has already confirmed that all future true M cars will use a quad-motor setup, and the X5 M is expected to follow suit.
Given the iX5 60 xDrive already produces 570 horsepower and 593 lb-ft of torque, the electric X5 M could deliver somewhere in the range of 800 to 900 horsepower, making it a supercar-level performer in a large SUV body.
Traditionalists can breathe easy: BMW is also developing a V8-powered X5 M alongside the electric version. 4-liter V8 with mild-hybrid technology, producing over 600 horsepower. Both the internal combustion and electric variants are slated to debut in 2028, sitting above the three M Performance versions already announced.
When they arrive, they’ll feature the yellow X light motif, M-specific side mirrors, and the stacked cube lights seen on the M Concept Neue Klasse. The X5 M60e plug-in hybrid is just hitting the market, so the true M variants are still a few years out.
