Solid-State Batteries Are Coming: What It Means for Your European or Japanese Car

Solid-State Batteries Are Coming: What It Means for Your European or Japanese Car

You may have heard about a big step forward in electric vehicle technology: Stellantis and battery maker Factorial just started road-testing a Dodge Charger with a solid-state battery. That’s the same technology that helped a Mercedes-Benz EQS prototype drive over 1,200 kilometers on a single charge.

But what does this mean for owners of BMW, Audi, Lexus, or Honda vehicles? In short: it’s a promising sign, but not something you’ll see in a showroom for a few years.

Solid-state batteries promise faster charging—Factorial’s cells can go from 15% to 90% in 18 minutes—and greater range, even in extreme temperatures. Mercedes, Hyundai, and Kia are also investors in this technology, so expect it to trickle down to many brands we service, including Porsche, Volvo, Jaguar, and Toyota.

For now, if you drive a hybrid or EV from any of these manufacturers, your current battery system is reliable and well-proven. No recalls or service changes are needed today. But when solid-state batteries do arrive, they’ll likely mean less time at the charger and longer life for your car’s battery pack.

At Boca Auto Care, we’re keeping a close eye on these developments. If you have questions about your vehicle’s battery health or upcoming maintenance, stop by or give us a call. We’ll give you straight talk—no hype, just honest help from your family-run shop since 1989.
