Smart Used SUV Picks Under $20k: What Our Shop Recommends for Reliable Driving

Shopping for a used SUV on a $20,000 budget? It’s doable, but only if you choose wisely. As a family-run shop that’s been keeping European and Japanese cars running strong since 1989, we see plenty of folks who bought a deal—and ended up with a headache. Here’s a practical look at five used SUVs that tend to hold up well, based on reliability data and real-world ownership costs.

For compact SUV buyers, the 2023 Mazda CX-5 is a standout. It’s newer than a comparable Toyota RAV4 or Honda CR-V at this price, with standard all-wheel drive and an excellent reliability record. Average annual repairs run around $447—close to the RAV4 and CR-V. If you’re set on a Toyota or Honda, expect a 2019 RAV4 or 2020 CR-V with 70,000–80,000 miles.

Moving up to two-row midsize SUVs, the 2022 Nissan Murano earns a solid reliability score from Consumer Reports and RepairPal. Despite some stigma around CVT transmissions, the 2022 model has very few complaints on file. Typical yearly repair costs are $507, below the class average.

You can find one with under 60,000 miles.

For three-row needs, the 2019 Toyota Highlander is a safe bet. It’s the last year of a proven generation, with above-average reliability and annual repair estimates of $489—well under the midsize SUV average. Expect around 100,000 miles for $20,000.

Full-size SUV fans should consider the 2014 Toyota Sequoia. It’s a body-on-frame hauler with above-average reliability, though annual maintenance runs about $722. Mileage will be high, but it’s one of the longest-lasting vehicles on the road.

Finally, the 2017 Acura MDX brings luxury without breaking the bank. It scores above average for reliability, with yearly repairs around $571—far below the luxury SUV class average of $807. Many examples have under 100,000 miles.

If you own any of these models—or a Mercedes, BMW, Audi, Porsche, VW, Volvo, Lexus, Toyota, or Honda—and want peace of mind, bring it by our shop. We’ll inspect it thoroughly and give you honest advice. No pressure, just decades of experience.
