Shifting Gears for Brain Health: Study Reveals Surprising Benefits of Manual Transmissions

A recent study out of Japan has shed new light on the benefits of driving a manual transmission, and it has nothing to do with the thrill of the drive. Led by renowned neuroscientist Professor Ryuta Kawashima, the research found that driving a manual stimulates the prefrontal cortex, the region of the brain responsible for memory, attention, and decision-making.

Kawashima, who developed the science behind Nintendo's popular Brain Age series, discovered that the physical act of shifting gears engages the brain in a way that automatic transmissions do not. By requiring drivers to coordinate multiple actions at once, such as reading traffic speed, using the clutch, and selecting gears, manual transmissions provide a kind of mental workout that can help preserve cognitive function.

This is particularly significant in Japan, where the population is aging rapidly. Despite these benefits, manual transmissions are becoming increasingly rare in Japan, accounting for just 1-2% of new vehicle sales. However, some entry-level vehicles, such as the Honda N-Van and Suzuki Carry, still offer manual transmissions, providing a glimmer of hope for those who value the mental and physical engagement of driving a stick shift.

As the automotive industry continues to trend towards automatic and semi-autonomous vehicles, this study highlights the importance of preserving the traditional manual transmission, not just for driving enthusiasts, but for the potential cognitive benefits it provides.
