San Diego Shop Turns Modern Tacomas Into Retro Off-Roaders, Starting at $42,000

San Diego Shop Turns Modern Tacomas Into Retro Off-Roaders, Starting at $42,000

If you love the practicality of a modern midsize pickup but miss the boxy, no-nonsense look of 1980s off-roaders, a San Diego-based conversion company called Flex has something for you. They’re offering three retro-styled Toyota Tacomas, known as the Renoca Windansea, with prices starting at $42,495.

The conversion kit, introduced in late 2023, replaces the third-generation Tacoma’s factory front end with a squared-off nose inspired by the 60-Series Land Cruiser. Think round headlights, a blocky grille, and a vintage-style bumper. Buyers can add custom paint schemes and off-road accessories to make the truck their own.

All three builds are based on 2017 Tacoma Double Cab models, but each is a different trim. The first is a red SR5 2WD with 87,094 miles, priced at $42,495. It sits on black American Racing Outlaw II wheels and BF Goodrich K02 tires, with a folding bed cover and chrome steel bumpers.

The second, also an SR5 2WD, has 40,399 miles and costs $44,495. It’s silver with grayscale decals and 17-inch Nomad Convoy wheels wrapped in Nitto Recon Grappler tires.

The standout is a TRD Sport 4WD built for serious overlanding. With 71,364 miles on the clock, it’s priced at $61,995. 5-inch lift, ARB skid plate, rock sliders, a Warn steel rear bumper, and a Prinsu roof rack. The bed holds an RCI rack with a ROAM rooftop tent, utility cans, and recovery boards.

All three keep the stock 3.5-liter V6, producing 278 horsepower and 265 lb-ft of torque, paired with a six-speed automatic. Whether two- or four-wheel drive, the powertrain remains untouched.

It’s a niche look, and the price is steep compared to a brand-new 2026 Tacoma, which starts at $32,445. But for those who want the soul of an old Land Cruiser with the reliability of a modern Toyota, these builds offer a unique compromise.
