Sainz Reportedly Closing In on New Williams Contract With Big Pay and Performance Clauses

Sainz Reportedly Closing In on New Williams Contract With Big Pay and Performance Clauses

Carlos Sainz is reportedly deep in talks with Williams over a new contract, according to recent reports. The driver faces a tight market, with most teams already locked in for the coming seasons.

Williams has had a disappointing 2026 season, despite major investments in leadership and car development. The team shifted focus to new regulations in mid-2025, hoping to gain an edge, but results have not followed. Even with a strong Mercedes power unit and an experienced driver lineup, the team has struggled to meet expectations.

Sainz had hoped Williams would challenge for podiums or at least be a regular points contender, but that hasn’t materialized. With few alternatives available, Aston Martin appears unlikely to change drivers. Audi is set with Hulkenberg, and a Red Bull return seems impossible, Sainz is expected to stay.

The new deal is said to include a significant pay increase, promises of car improvements, and exit clauses that would allow Sainz to leave if Williams fails to meet certain performance targets. The agreement is expected to be announced in the coming days, before the Dutch Grand Prix weekend.

Sainz originally signed a two-year deal, but this extension could add several more years. Williams reportedly needs to meet all his demands, as losing him would risk the future of their F1 project. If the team delivers a better car, Sainz is seen as capable of leading the team and fighting for podiums.
