Safety Watch: Honda Probes Older Odyssey Minivans for Airbag Risk

Federal safety regulators have opened an investigation into roughly 200,000 older Honda Odyssey minivans after receiving reports that the airbags may deploy without warning. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) says the issue affects 2005 to 2007 model year Odysseys, with at least 16 complaints citing sudden, unintended airbag deployments that could startle drivers and increase the risk of a crash.
According to NHTSA documents, the problem appears to stem from a fault in the vehicle’s occupant detection system. In several cases, drivers reported hearing a loud pop or seeing the airbag light flash before the bags inflated spontaneously. While no injuries have been linked to the defect so far, the agency is concerned about the potential for distraction or loss of control, especially on busy roads.
Honda has acknowledged the investigation and says it is cooperating fully with NHTSA. Owners of affected Odysseys are advised to watch for warning signs like an intermittent airbag light or unusual noises from the dashboard. If you drive one of these minivans and suspect a problem, bring it to a trusted repair shop right away.
