Rivian Founder Details Plans for High-Performance RAD Vehicles

Rivian’s new performance division, RAD (Rivian Adventure Department), won’t just add flashy badges to existing models. In a recent interview on The Drivecast, CEO RJ Scaringe explained that RAD vehicles will receive substantial hardware upgrades, delivering a distinctly more aggressive driving experience.

Speaking from Park City, Utah, Scaringe described RAD as a skunkworks team focused on pushing performance to new extremes. “These aren’t just new badging on them,” he said.

Scaringe acknowledged that mainstream vehicles require compromises to hit price targets. RAD, however, allows engineers to prioritize performance over balance. “We could turn the dial up further,” he said.

While the R3X concept debuted before RAD was public, Scaringe confirmed it embodies the division’s spirit. “If we showed R3X today, we would have called it a RAD vehicle,” he said, noting its wider track, larger wheels, and motorsports-inspired interior with woven bucket seats and a cork dashboard.

Scaringe compared RAD to legendary performance sub-brands like BMW M and Mercedes-AMG, noting that both started as small, passionate teams. “RAD is really that,” he said. “A few people within the team authentically recognized a desire to make vehicles even more capable.

RAD vehicles will carry a higher price tag due to the extensive engineering work. Scaringe promised they will be “really, really exciting” for driving enthusiasts.
