Ram to Drop Hemi Hybrid and Stop-Start on Most 2027 1500 Models

Ram to Drop Hemi Hybrid and Stop-Start on Most 2027 1500 Models

Ram is removing the 48-volt hybrid assist from most 2027 Ram 1500 V-8s, along with the automatic stop-start function that came with it. 7-liter Hemi V-8 will continue in nonhybrid form for the majority of the upcoming model year. A limited number of eTorque-equipped trucks will still be built during the production transition.

The Hemi's hybrid system, called eTorque, has been around since 2019. It replaced the traditional alternator with a 48-volt battery, providing extra torque at launch, improved fuel economy, and smoother starts. The Hemi briefly went away for the 2025 model year, but customer demand brought it back, still paired with the hybrid system.

Now Ram is returning the engine closer to its roots.

With the eTorque system gone, the stop-start feature is also being dropped. That system shuts the engine off when the truck stops to cut emissions from idling, but it has generally been unpopular among American drivers. The federal government had encouraged the technology through EPA credits, but those credits were repealed in February 2026.

While Stellantis earlier appeared to indicate it would keep stop-start, Ram seems to be among the first automakers to remove it.

Nonhybrid Ram 1500 models are expected to arrive in showrooms this fall, and some eTorque versions should still be available for buyers who want them.
