Catalytic Converter Thefts Increase Nationwide

Catalytic converter thefts are rising across the country, with over 137,000 reported last year, according to a Carfax analysis. Pickups and SUVs are the most targeted vehicles due to their higher ground clearance. Hybrid vehicles, such as those from Toyota, Lexus, and Honda, are particularly vulnerable because their catalytic converters contain more precious metals like platinum, palladium, and rhodium.

These converters can sell for up to $1,400, compared to $25-$300 for standard converters. Vehicles from European and Japanese manufacturers, including Mercedes-Benz, BMW, Audi, Porsche, VW, Volvo, and Jaguar, are also at risk. To discourage thieves, vehicle owners can take steps such as parking in well-lit areas, using a locked garage, and installing motion-sensor lights.

Engraving a vehicle's VIN onto the catalytic converter can aid in recovery if it is stolen. The National Insurance Crime Bureau and other organizations have reported similar findings, highlighting the need for vehicle owners to be aware of this issue and take proactive measures to protect their vehicles.
