Proposed US Bill Targets Vehicles with Significant Chinese Ownership

A bill introduced by two Michigan lawmakers aims to limit the entry of Chinese-made vehicles and those with significant Chinese ownership into the US. The Protecting America from Chinese Cars Act targets cars built by companies where Chinese entities hold more than a 15% stake. 7% stake, and Polestar, which is over 20% owned by Geely.
The bill also seeks to block vehicles from China and other adversarial nations from being driven into the US from Canada or Mexico. Owners of European and Japanese vehicles are unlikely to be affected. However, owners of newer Volvo or Polestar models may face potential impacts on parts availability or future models if the bill passes.
A similar rule was previously waived for Volvo, and the new bill allows for specific authorizations under strict conditions. Currently, the proposed legislation does not affect vehicle owners, but it may have implications in the future.
