Porsche Waves Goodbye to Its Bestselling Gas Macan - But the Timing Has Us Scratching Our Heads

Porsche is officially ending production of the gasoline-powered Macan this month, a move that retires the brand’s longest-running current model and forces loyalists into either the all-electric Macan or a pricier Cayenne. The original compact SUV debuted in 2015 and quickly became Porsche’s top seller for most of its 12-year run, but the automaker is now forging ahead with its plan to electrify the lineup.

A new internal combustion Macan successor is reportedly in the works, though it won’t arrive for a couple more years.

The timing of this decision is raising eyebrows. S. 3 percent operating profit despite record sales. You’d think the tooling and design costs for a model this mature would be fully paid off by now. Motor1 first reported the production halt, which we independently verified, and the move leaves buyers with a limited window to snag a turbocharged four- or six-cylinder Macan before they vanish.

We’ve asked Porsche if order books are still open and are waiting to hear back.

For driving enthusiasts, the loss stings. 0-liter inline-four, may not sound like a powerhouse, but Porsche packs it with extra handling gear that makes it a genuine joy on a winding road. Meanwhile, the Macan Electric is an impressive machine in its own right, great range and charging specs, but it’s a tougher sell at a higher price point.

Porsche had originally planned a quick handoff from gas to electric, but slower EV demand and customer feedback forced a rethink. The company committed to a second-generation gas Macan, but that car is still years out. For now, anyone wanting a new Macan will have to go electric.

And with the 718 Boxster and Cayman also facing an uncertain path to electrification, Porsche’s strategy feels like a high-stakes gamble.
