Porsche CEO Confirms Electric 718 Is Still Coming

Porsche CEO Michael Leiters says the electric 718 Cayman and Boxster are still in development and still on the way.

In an interview with Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung, Leiters said the electric platform won out because it was the best solution economically, and described it as a fantastic car.

The assurance follows a long stretch of mixed signals, with Porsche at different points weighing gas, electric, or both replacements for the 718 twins. A July report said Volkswagen planned to cut 10 vehicles, including the gas-powered 718 replacement, and the Volkswagen Group's financial strain appears to have pushed Porsche toward an electric-only plan.

Porsche's EV sales have not been strong: 22.2% of its 280,000 global sales in 2025 were fully electric and 12.1% were plug-in hybrids. In Europe, 57.9% of deliveries had some form of electrification, with about 33% fully electric.

Production of the gas-powered 718 Boxster and Cayman ended in October, though Porsche still sold 18,612 examples, down 21% from 2024. No official specs or details for the electric 718 have been released, and only spy shots have surfaced. The closest rival, Alpine's electrified A110, is due later this year for a 2027 launch, while Audi has vowed to proceed with its own Concept C-based electric sports car on the same platform.
