Park It Outside: BMW Warns 29,000 Owners of Fire Risk

BMW has issued a recall affecting nearly 29,000 vehicles, advising owners to park outdoors and away from structures due to a potential fire hazard. The warning, which covers certain 2022-2024 models, stems from a defect in the coolant pump that could overheat and ignite. No injuries have been reported so far, but the automaker is urging immediate action.

The recall specifically targets vehicles equipped with the B58 engine, a popular inline-six found in models like the X5, X7, and 540i. According to documents filed with the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, the coolant pump’s electrical connector may fail, leading to a short circuit.

BMW says the fix is a software update that monitors pump performance and shuts it down if a problem is detected. Dealers will perform the update for free.

Owners are being told to park outside until the repair is complete, as a precaution against the rare but serious risk of a vehicle fire. BMW will begin notifying affected drivers by mail starting in late March. If you own one of these models and haven’t heard from the dealer yet, it’s worth checking your VIN on the NHTSA recall website.

For now, keep the car away from the garage, and schedule that service appointment as soon as the parts and software are ready.
