Palm Beach’s Four Arts Unveils Bold $250M Makeover with First Look at New Designs

Palm Beach’s Four Arts Unveils Bold $250M Makeover with First Look at New Designs

The Society of the Four Arts in Palm Beach has released the first detailed renderings of its massive renovation and expansion, giving the public a clear glimpse of what the finished campus will look like. Construction is already underway on the $250 million project, which officials call a defining moment for the 90-year-old cultural institution.

The overhaul will bring expanded gallery space, a revamped auditorium, and a relocated children’s library, among other upgrades.

Architect Nathaniel Rogers of Beyer Blinder Belle said the design aims to breathe new life into two landmarked buildings while preserving the character of the Four Arts’ two-block campus. The Esther B. O’Keeffe Building will grow by 45 percent, adding a fourth gallery room and a second-floor art-conservation lab.

The Walter S. Gubelmann Auditorium will lose its six interior columns and gain an expanded stage, updated lighting, and a maroon-and-wood color scheme. Outside, covered colonnades will stretch east and west, offering space for intermission gatherings and wine receptions.

Across the campus, the John E. Rovensky Building will get a three-story addition, boosting its size by more than 10,000 square feet. The children’s library moves from the second floor to the first, nearly doubling in space. A new tree-shaded entrance plaza will complement the O’Keeffe building’s colonnades.

Administrative offices will consolidate on the second floor, while the third floor adds a board room, breakout spaces, and a balcony for the Garden Club of Palm Beach. Roadways will be repaved with gray brick for a unified look. President and CEO Philip Rylands called the project an investment in the community, not just the buildings, saying it will allow the institution to present top-tier programs for decades to come.
