Palm Beach County Hits Pause on AI Data Centers - But One Giant Project Rolls On

Palm Beach County just hit the brakes on new AI data centers, but the biggest and most controversial proposal in the region gets to keep moving. County commissioners approved a temporary zoning freeze on new applications, buying time to rewrite decades-old rules that weren’t designed for the massive power and water demands of modern AI facilities.

The moratorium stops future projects from entering the pipeline, except for one: Project Tango.

The county’s current zoning code treats data centers as light industrial, like a standard warehouse. But today’s hyperscale AI centers consume exponentially more electricity, require constant cooling, and generate a low-frequency hum that can travel for blocks. Under the freeze, planners will craft new rules specifically for AI installations, assess strain on the power grid and water supply, and set noise and environmental standards.

Similar pauses are being explored in Flagler and Nassau counties as Florida sees a surge in data center proposals.

Project Tango, planned for 202 acres along Southern Boulevard, is the flashpoint driving this debate. 8-million-square-foot AI campus, right next to the Arden and Wellington communities and just 1,200 feet from Saddle View Elementary School. Hundreds of residents have packed hearings to protest the constant noise, water demands, and the jarring sight of seven-story industrial complexes beside homes and schools.

The county’s zoning commission already voted unanimously to recommend denial, calling the project incompatible with the area. The final decision now rests with the Board of County Commissioners, with a vote set for July 15, 2026.
