Over 318,000 BMW and Toyota Vehicles Recalled Over Engine Starter Fire Risk

Over 318,000 BMW and Toyota Vehicles Recalled Over Engine Starter Fire Risk

A major recall is hitting two of the world's biggest automakers this week, affecting more than 318,000 vehicles across the BMW and Toyota brands. The issue centers on a faulty engine starter that can overheat and potentially catch fire, even when the car is parked and turned off.

Both manufacturers are urging owners to act quickly.

BMW’s recall covers roughly 105,000 units, including certain 5 Series, 7 Series, X5, and X7 models from 2019 through 2021. Toyota’s recall is far larger, involving over 213,000 vehicles, including the popular Camry, RAV4, and Sienna from the 2021 and 2022 model years. In both cases, the starter’s electrical components can short-circuit, leading to excessive heat and, in some cases, flames.

No injuries have been reported so far, but the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) has logged several incidents of smoke and fire. BMW dealers will replace the starter motor free of charge, while Toyota will install an updated part and, in some models, a protective cover.

Notifications start going out next month. If you own one of these vehicles, check your VIN on the NHTSA website or contact your local dealer immediately.
