One Tundra, One Recall: Toyota Issues Rare Single-Vehicle Alert Over a Labeling Glitch

Toyota is recalling exactly one 2026 Tundra pickup truck after a dealer-installed accessory package wasn't properly noted on the vehicle's load-carrying capacity label. It's an unusually narrow recall, but federal safety rules don't make exceptions for minor paperwork errors.

The issue came to light when a dealer noticed the accessory package was missing from the truck's build sheet. Southeast Toyota Distributors, which handles regional distribution, reviewed its records and found that the package had been accidentally deleted from the system after installation.

According to a report filed with the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, the added weight from the accessories exceeded the federal threshold that requires an updated label, even though the truck's actual payload and passenger capacity weren't compromised.

Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard No. 110 requires manufacturers to revise the load-carrying capacity label whenever accessories added after final certification push the vehicle beyond a set limit. The inaccurate label, while not causing any reported incidents, could theoretically lead to overloading and increase crash risk.

As a fix, Toyota will mail the owner a new label designed specifically for that truck, based on the net weight of the installed accessories. The replacement will be applied over the original label at no cost.

To prevent a repeat, SET has paused the issuance of modified load-carrying capacity labels until its accessory package process and calculations are corrected. Owner notification letters are expected to go out by September 4, 2026, and will include a contact number for anyone who may qualify for a pre-recall reimbursement.
