One Loose-Steering Complaint Triggers Tiny BMW X3 Recall of Just 13 Vehicles

One Loose-Steering Complaint Triggers Tiny BMW X3 Recall of Just 13 Vehicles

A single customer tip from outside the U.S. set off a chain of checks that ended with BMW recalling only 13 examples of the 2025 X3. The customer told a dealer the steering wheel could be turned with almost no effort, which led to an engineering probe, a look at production records, and finally a limited recall.

The investigation began on July 15, 2026, after the non-U.S. owner reported the unusually light steering. BMW inspected the car, found no damage to the steering system, and sent the part for further analysis, which also came back clean. With the hardware ruled out, BMW focused on how the vehicles were built.

A review of assembly records revealed that for a small number of cars, a deviation in the production process could leave the steering spindle attached to the column out of spec. Using that data, BMW pinpointed 13 vehicles built between August 7, 2023, and February 7, 2026. The recall decision was made on August 5, 2026.

The issue is more specific than a simple disconnect. According to BMW's filing, an affected spindle may allow the driver to turn the steering wheel without applying enough torque to actually turn the wheels. That could be more dangerous than a locked wheel, since the driver might not immediately realize the car isn't responding.

BMW says it has no reports of crashes or injuries tied to the problem.

Given the severity, BMW's advisory is direct: don't drive the affected vehicles, and park them outside rather than in a garage. Dealers will check the spindle-to-column connection and replace the hardware if needed; if that's not enough, they'll replace the entire spindle and column.

Both repairs are free. The steering spindle part numbers are 6887185 for sDrive models and 5A32F06 for xDrive models, supplied by BMW AG.

Dealer notifications went out on August 12, 2026, the same day BMW submitted its report to NHTSA. Owner notification letters are scheduled for First Class mail on October 2, 2026, and the affected VINs will be searchable on NHTSA.gov that day. The recall covers the X3 sDrive30i, X3 30 xDrive, and the X3 M50 xDrive.
