Simple options include dropping the battery off at a local hazardous waste facility or taking it to a metal recycler, where you're more likely to get cash for the valuable lead inside. Many auto parts stores, like O'Reilly and AutoZone, offer a $10 gift card for each battery you bring in, though there are limits, O'Reilly caps it at five per day.

That gift card is separate from any core charge return you'd get when buying a new battery, so don't expect both. Staff can also refuse batteries that are leaking or visibly damaged.

The dangers of improper disposal are serious. Car batteries contain lead and sulfuric acid, which can leak into soil and water if thrown away carelessly. That pollution threatens wildlife and human health, with potential long-term physical and neurological effects. Even just storing an old battery in your garage carries risk, sulfuric acid can damage your car's paint if it leaks.
