Nissan’s AI Cameras Track Worker Movements at Mississippi Plant, Citing $34M in Health Savings

Nissan’s AI Cameras Track Worker Movements at Mississippi Plant, Citing $34M in Health Savings

Nissan has installed AI-powered cameras at its Canton, Mississippi, factory that watch how employees move during assembly work, flagging potentially unsafe body positions. The system recognizes joints and angles, spotting excessive bending, prolonged awkward postures, or deviations from the preferred task sequence.

Nissan calls its ideal method for each job the “golden cycle,” covering component order, operation time, and worker movement. When the AI spots an issue, managers and engineers can investigate, coaching workers on safer techniques, reassigning tasks, or modifying workstations. The company says the goal is fixing the job itself, not just blaming the worker.

Nissan insists this isn’t about replacing people. Manufacturing executive Victor Taylor told Business Insider, “We’re not talking about job elimination.” The system was originally developed for training and efficiency, but process engineer Chi Amaechi said its injury-prevention potential emerged later.

Nissan reports the technology has contributed to about $34 million in safety and health-related savings at Canton. The plant is currently the only one using the system, but Nissan plans to expand it to Smyrna, Tennessee, and potentially its powertrain operations. This comes as the company cuts jobs and capacity elsewhere, and as experienced workers retire, making their knowledge harder to replace.
