Nissan Versa Sedan Through the Years: A Look at Every Generation

The Nissan Versa sedan has long stood for simplicity, affordability, and practicality. Across its generations, it has offered a straightforward driving experience, with roomy interiors and low running costs. It may not be the most thrilling car, but it has consistently provided good fuel economy and, in many cases, a manual transmission option.
The final Versa sedan models, sold from 2023 to 2025, were the last new cars in the US with a starting price under $20,000. 6-liter four-cylinder engine with 122 horsepower and 114 lb-ft of torque, paired with either a CVT or a five-speed manual. The big update for 2023 was a new front fascia, updated logos, new paint colors, and 17-inch wheels.
Inside, the infotainment screen could be upgraded from seven to eight inches on the SR trim, with a Wi-Fi hotspot and wireless charging. The ride was described as pleasant, with light steering and minimal wind noise.
The third generation, produced from 2020 to 2022, introduced a major redesign. It was longer, wider, and lower than before, with a roomier cabin and a fresh look inspired by the Kicks and Altima. This generation also brought a host of safety features as standard, including automatic emergency braking, lane-departure warning, blind-spot warning, and rear-cross traffic alert.
The interior was completely reworked, with a new instrument panel, D-shaped steering wheel, push-button start, and available heated seats.
The second generation, which ran from 2012 to 2019, was built on a lighter platform, using 20% fewer components. The engine featured dual fuel injectors per cylinder for a cleaner burn and better fuel economy. The revised CVT had 30% less friction and was lighter and smaller than before.
A five-speed manual or a four-speed automatic were also available. In 2015, the car received a facelift with a bolder front end and new interior features. By 2018, a backup camera and a seven-inch infotainment screen became standard.
8-liter engine with 122 horsepower and 127 lb-ft of torque, available with a CVT, four-speed automatic, or six-speed manual. It was praised for its spacious interior and large trunk. In 2010, the car got a facelift with new front and rear fascias, revised grille, and new wheel styles.
6-liter engine with 107 horsepower was also introduced, along with standard ABS and, on higher trims, stability and traction control. The Versa was discontinued in the US after the 2025 model year, though it continues to be sold elsewhere.
