Nissan Joins Subaru in Massive SUV Recall Over a Basic Assembly Error

Nissan Joins Subaru in Massive SUV Recall Over a Basic Assembly Error

Nissan is recalling nearly 168,000 SUVs across the United States, and the reason is surprisingly basic: the floor mats were installed incorrectly. The recall affects certain 2023 and 2024 models of the Nissan Pathfinder, Infiniti QX60, and the recently launched Ariya electric vehicle.

The problem stems from a simple mistake at the factory where the mats weren't properly secured, leaving them free to slide forward and potentially jam the accelerator pedal.

This is the second major recall in recent weeks tied to a straightforward assembly oversight. Just last month, Subaru pulled over 118,000 vehicles for a nearly identical issue, floor mats that could interfere with the gas pedal. In both cases, the fix is quick and free: dealers will inspect and properly anchor the mats, often in under 30 minutes.

No injuries have been reported yet, but the risk of unintended acceleration is serious enough to warrant immediate action.

Nissan will begin notifying owners by mail starting late next month. In the meantime, drivers can check if their vehicle is affected by entering the VIN on the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration's website or by contacting their local dealer directly. The company advises anyone who notices their floor mat shifting to remove it from the driver's side until it can be professionally secured.

While the error is embarrassing for a manufacturer of Nissan's size, the solution is thankfully straightforward.
