Mitsubishi Pajero Family to Expand with Compact Crossover and Kei SUV

Mitsubishi Pajero Family to Expand with Compact Crossover and Kei SUV

Mitsubishi is reportedly planning to grow the revived Pajero lineup beyond the flagship SUV, adding two smaller models in the coming years. The rugged midsize, ladder-frame Pajero, set to return for 2027, will reportedly be joined by a compact crossover aimed at the Toyota RAV4 and a tiny kei-class SUV that could bring back the Pajero Mini badge, which disappeared over 15 years ago.

According to recent reports, the flagship Pajero is due later this year, with a compact unibody crossover expected around 2028 or 2029, followed by a kei-class model around 2030. The RAV4-sized crossover is described as the more significant of the pair. Rather than reusing an existing Nissan or Renault product, Mitsubishi is reportedly developing a dedicated platform while borrowing some components from the Outlander to manage costs.

This approach is said to allow the vehicle to maintain its own identity while leveraging Mitsubishi's hybrid expertise.

Nikkei Asia reports that Mitsubishi will differentiate its compact Pajero from rivals like the RAV4 and Mazda CX-5 by emphasizing four-wheel-drive technology. The report also suggests this model will serve as a spiritual successor to the Pajero iO, known as the Pajero Pinin in Europe, and will offer hybrid powertrain options.

The kei-class SUV, expected around 2030, is reportedly a unibody model with increased ground clearance, available all-wheel drive, and hybrid power borrowed from the Xforce crossover. Japanese renders hint at styling inspired by the boxy Delica Mini, featuring upright proportions, chunky cladding, and off-road-inspired looks.

While the kei model is unlikely to reach US showrooms, the compact Pajero could fit well in the American market as a tougher-looking alternative to the Outlander, given the strong sales of RAV4 and CR-V in the US.
