Mississippi Deploys AI-Powered Traffic Cameras

The Mississippi Department of Public Safety has leased AI camera trailers to be placed in high-crash areas and construction zones. These cameras use artificial intelligence to detect traffic violations such as texting while driving, speeding, and failure to secure child passengers.

The system can capture infractions at speeds of up to 186 mph and sends images and data to nearby officers, who can then issue citations. Some lawmakers have raised concerns about privacy implications, while others see the system as a tool for reducing crashes. The cameras are intended to promote safe driving practices.

Various vehicle models, including those from Mercedes-Benz, BMW, Audi, Porsche, VW, Volvo, Jaguar, Lexus, Toyota, and Honda, will be subject to monitoring by these cameras. Drivers are advised to follow traffic laws and be aware of their surroundings to prevent accidents.
