Mini Cooper Reliability in 2026: The Comeback Story That’s Hard to Ignore

For years, Mini Coopers were the cars you loved to look at but hesitated to buy used. Their quirky charm and go-kart handling came with a reputation for timing chain failures, electrical gremlins, and costly repairs. That reputation, however, is now outdated. D. Power’s 2026 dependability study, ahead of Toyota and Honda, and trailing only Buick and Lexus.

It’s a shift that didn’t happen overnight, but the numbers are hard to argue with.

The turning point came with the third-generation models, which swapped older, problem-prone engines for BMW’s proven B-series powertrains. That B48 engine, first used in the 2014 F56 Mini Cooper, brought better thermal management and stronger internals. Combined with a modular chassis borrowed from BMW, newer Minis also feature simplified electronics and improved serviceability.

The result? D. Power for most years between 2021 and 2024, while NHTSA data shows fewer than four recalls per model year and just single-digit customer complaints across the board. Even the Convertible, a rare breed in today’s market, has held up well with minimal issues.

That said, not every Mini is a gem. The 2025 Countryman has drawn 17 complaints, mostly electrical blackouts and drive-mode glitches, plus two recalls for airbag and brake issues. On the used lot, steer clear of the 2014 Hardtop (seven recalls, 33 complaints) and the 2013 Convertible, which saw 70-plus complaints tied to water leaks, power steering failures, and sunroof drainage problems.

For most buyers, though, the modern Mini is a reliable, fun, and surprisingly practical choice. Just keep an eye on oil levels in the Cooper S and JCW models, and budget for occasional carbon cleaning on the direct-injection engines.
