Mercedes-AMG Says Current C-Class Likely Won't Get Its New V8

Mercedes-AMG has confirmed that the current-generation C-Class, which recently received a mid-cycle facelift, probably won't be offered with its new 4.0-liter twin-turbocharged V8, even in C 63 form. That dashes hopes that the BMW M3 rival would finally get the eight-cylinder engine many fans wanted.
The new V8, which features a flat-plane crank and meets Euro 7 emissions standards, is slated for other AMG models, including flagship versions of the CLE Coupe and CLE Cabriolet. But according to Klaus Rehkugler. Mercedes' head of product management and global training, the math doesn't work for the C-Class.
He told Car Expert that while the four-door C63 was popular in markets like North America, Australia, Japan, China, and Korea, a V8 return isn't planned for this generation. ' and the answer is 'probably not'," he said.
The current C 63, a plug-in hybrid with a four-cylinder engine, is reportedly nearing the end of production. Mercedes-AMG is said to be preparing a new C 53 with a non-hybridized engine to fill the gap, though it won't match the C 63's performance.
There's still hope for the next generation. The current C-Class has been built since 2021, and a new version could arrive in late 2028. Rehkugler didn't rule out a V8 for that model, noting Mercedes should be able to keep the new V8 alive for at least another 10 years, leaving the door open for an eight-cylinder C 63 in the future.
