Mercedes-AMG Brings Back the Big V-8: 2027 GLE63 S and GLS63 Pack 603 HP

Mercedes-AMG Brings Back the Big V-8: 2027 GLE63 S and GLS63 Pack 603 HP

For a moment there, it seemed like Mercedes-Benz was ready to say goodbye to the V-8. The C63 downsized to a four-cylinder. The G550 swapped its eight for a six. 6-liter V-6. But the tide has turned. 0-liter twin-turbo V-8—codenamed M177 Evo—that cranks out 603 horsepower and 627 lb-ft of torque.

That’s a 73-horsepower bump over the previous generation, thanks in part to a flat-plane crankshaft and an integrated starter-generator that adds 23 hp and 151 lb-ft for low-end response.

Performance numbers are equally impressive. 9 seconds. 4 seconds—those figures may be conservative. The new flat-plane crank, typically found in high-revving supercars, actually delivers peak power at a lower rpm range (5,500 to 6,100 rpm) than the old cross-plane unit. Why the change?

Mercedes engineers told us it’s about meeting emissions targets, not chasing redline bragging rights.

Chassis upgrades match the powertrain’s ambition. An electronic locking rear differential replaces brake-based torque vectoring for cleaner power delivery. The AMG Ride Control+ suspension—with air springs and adaptive dampers—offers a comfortable ride in Comfort mode or tight body control in Sport and Sport+.

4 inch in sport modes or above 75 mph.

Visually, the 2027 models get the latest AMG grille and a palette of Manufaktur color options—we’re partial to Yacht Blue interior with Moonlight White Magno exterior. Pricing hasn’t been announced, but the 2026 GLE63 S started north of $130,000 and the GLS63 above $150,000. Expect similar figures when both SUVs arrive at dealers this fall.
