Mercedes-AMG Admits It Got the C63 Wrong - What That Means for Used Car Shoppers

Mercedes-AMG Admits It Got the C63 Wrong - What That Means for Used Car Shoppers

Mercedes-AMG has effectively walked away from its own 671-horsepower C63 hybrid, and the message for used car buyers is clear: proceed with caution. AMG CEO Michael Schiebe recently acknowledged that the company misjudged what enthusiasts wanted when it replaced the beloved V8 with a turbocharged four-cylinder hybrid powertrain.

The C63 badge has been pulled from the lineup, and whispers of a future V8 revival only make the outgoing hybrid model look like a costly misstep.

3 seconds. But buyers didn't care. Sales tanked. Enthusiasts test-drove the car, then walked straight to BMW M3 or Audi RS5 dealers. The problem wasn't power; it was weight (nearly 4,650 pounds), complexity, and the absence of that signature V8 rumble. AMG was squeezed by emissions rules, but the market verdict was brutal.

For anyone considering a used C63 hybrid, the risks are serious. The engineering is unprecedented for a compact sedan: an electrically assisted turbocharger, a two-speed gearbox on the rear motor, and a dense battery pack. Once the factory warranty expires, repairing or replacing these components could be astronomically expensive.

Depreciation has been steep, and resale demand is weak. 0-liter straight-six, and a V8-powered C63 could return later. Until then, the hybrid version is a fascinating but risky bet.
