Mazda Hits a June Sales Record, but One Beloved SUV Stalls Out

Mazda wrapped up its best June ever, moving 37,167 vehicles in the U.S. for an 11.3% jump over the same month last year. The headline number is strong, but dig into the breakdown and you’ll find a few surprises—including a brand-new model that’s oddly losing steam and an aging sedan suddenly selling like hotcakes.

The big head-scratcher is the Mazda CX-5. You’d expect a fresh redesign to boost sales, but the 2026 CX-5 actually dropped from 13,759 units last June to 9,689 this time around. That’s a 30% decline. Industry watchers suspect it’s a temporary hiccup as factories shift from old to new production lines.

7% to 3,787 units. Even the MX-5 Miata is up 5% for the year.

On the bigger crossover front, the CX-70 and CX-90 are climbing. 8%, and year-to-date both are up over 24%. But together they still trail the CX-50, which has become Mazda’s quiet powerhouse. 2% surge—helped by a new hybrid option and immunity from tariff pressures. That success may also be pulling buyers away from the CX-5.

S. this year, with SUVs accounting for 176,372 of those sales. The CX-5’s stumble is worth watching, especially if it signals a lasting shift toward larger models. But with a record June and the CX-50 on a roll, Mazda has plenty to feel good about—and a few strategic questions to answer.
