Mazda CX-70 vs CX-90: Two Nearly Identical SUVs, One Big Difference Inside

Mazda CX-70 vs CX-90: Two Nearly Identical SUVs, One Big Difference Inside

Mazda’s 2026 CX-70 and CX-90 midsize SUVs look almost the same on paper, same engines, same platform, same exterior dimensions, but a closer look shows they serve very different buyers. The CX-70, introduced in 2025 as a two-row alternative, offers far more cargo space, while the CX-90 adds a third row for extra passengers, though those rear seats are best suited for children.

8-kWh battery for 323 hp and about 30 miles of EV range in the CX-70 (26 miles in the CX-90). All-wheel drive and an eight-speed automatic are standard. Fuel economy is nearly identical, with the CX-70 rated at 24/28/25 mpg and the CX-90 at 23/28/25 mpg; PHEV versions get 61 and 56 MPGe combined, respectively.

Pricing differs notably. The CX-90 starts at $39,300, while the CX-70 begins at $42,750. However, the CX-70 PHEV starts at $44,450, about $10,000 less than last year, while the CX-90 PHEV starts at $50,695. The CX-70 also gains a towing mode on Premium trims (5,000-pound capacity) and more base tech for 2026, while the CX-90 adds standard Alexa integration and extra PHEV features.

9 cu-ft in the CX-90. The CX-90 can seat up to eight on lower trims and seven on upper trims, but the third row is tight. Both have high-quality cabins, though the CX-70 includes leather and ventilated front seats on lower trims, while the CX-90’s base trim uses leatherette.

Ownership costs are similar, estimated around $5,200 annually including insurance and maintenance, which is lower than German rivals. Ultimately, the CX-90 suits families needing occasional extra seating, while the CX-70 wins for those prioritizing cargo space. For most buyers, the CX-90’s flexibility makes it the better all-rounder.
