Mazda 3 Sales Nearly Double as Gas Prices Climb

Mazda's July 2026 sales report shows a surprising shift: the 8-year-old Mazda 3 sedan nearly doubled its sales compared to last year, while the brand's SUVs mostly declined. S. 5% jump year-over-year. 4%.

Meanwhile, every Mazda SUV except the entry-level CX-30 saw sales drops, including the CX-50, CX-70, CX-90, and the newer CX-5. Overall, SUV sales fell 18% compared to July 2025. The Mazda 3's design still looks current, but the model debuted in 2018, making it eight years old, older than the previous generation's five-year run.

The sales spike likely reflects macroeconomic pressures. Fuel prices keep soaring amid the ongoing Middle East conflict, and while the country isn't officially in a recession, a K-shaped economy means many people are struggling. Shoppers are gravitating toward Mazda's smallest, cheapest option.

" It lacks a hybrid option and has a small infotainment screen, but it's still enjoyable to drive.

Despite the surge, SUVs still dominate overall sales. The CX-5 remained Mazda's bestseller with 12,068 units sold in July, far outpacing the Mazda 3's 3,903. But if the trend continues and the gap narrows, smaller, affordable sedans could see a broader comeback.
