Maserati Teases a Return to Four-Door Luxury, But Don’t Call It a Sedan Just Yet

Maserati is plotting a comeback to the sedan segment, though the Italian brand’s top engineer isn’t ready to commit to a traditional three-box shape. In an interview at the Goodwood Festival of Speed, head of engineering Davide Danesin told CarBuzz that the company plans to introduce lower, sedan-like vehicles in the coming years.

” The automaker expects to share more details before the end of the year.

The last Maserati sedans, the Ghibli and the iconic Quattroporte, which dates back to the 1960s, were both discontinued, leaving a noticeable gap in the lineup. Danesin hinted that the new model could ride on the Gran Turismo’s architecture, which would help Maserati maintain its own identity within Stellantis while keeping development costs in check.

Alternatively, the company could tap Stellantis’s STLA Large platform or the older Giorgio chassis used by the Alfa Romeo Giulia. “The architecture depends very much on the positioning,” Danesin explained, noting that a mainstream sedan might share a base with other Stellantis products, while a high-end flagship could use a stretched Gran Turismo setup.

Under the hood, the Nettuno V6 is a likely starting point, possibly paired with hybrid assistance. Danesin acknowledged that customers expect a “level of purity” and that hybridization isn’t always an advantage, though he left the door open for a V8 depending on market demand. The timing is critical: Maserati’s sales dropped 58% from 2023 to 2025, and the brand has no large SUV after ending the Levante.

CEO Santo Ficili called Maserati “the only luxury brand within Stellantis” and said the company needs to invent something unique. With Chinese brands tightening their grip in Europe and few rivals building sedans, a fresh four-door could be a smart bet. A concept preview is expected at the Paris Motor Show in October.
