Major SUV Recall Issued Over Seat Belt Defect That Could Cause Injury

Ford Motor Company has issued a recall affecting more than 270,000 SUVs across Canada and the United States due to a seat belt issue that could increase the risk of injury in a crash. The recall covers certain 2021-2023 Bronco Sport and 2022-2023 Maverick models. According to Transport Canada, the front seat belt pretensioners may not properly secure occupants when deployed, potentially leaving passengers inadequately restrained during a collision.

The automaker says the defect stems from a manufacturing issue in which the pretensioner cables can break under stress. If the cable fails, the seat belt may not tighten as designed, raising the likelihood of injury. Ford has reported a small number of warranty claims linked to the problem but no confirmed crashes or injuries.

Owners are being urged to contact a Ford dealer as soon as possible to schedule a free repair, which involves replacing the affected seat belt assemblies.

The recall comes as federal regulators push automakers to address safety defects more quickly. Ford says it will notify affected owners by mail starting next month. For now, drivers can check if their vehicle is included by entering the VIN on Ford's recall website or contacting their local dealer.

While the issue is serious, officials advise drivers to continue using their vehicles but to book a repair promptly rather than parking them immediately.
