Lucid Motors Slashes US Workforce by 18% Amidst Restructuring Efforts

Lucid Motors Slashes US Workforce by 18% Amidst Restructuring Efforts

In a bid to cut costs and adapt to declining market conditions, Lucid Motors has announced it will be laying off approximately 18% of its US workforce. This move comes just four months after the electric vehicle manufacturer cut 12% of its workforce. The latest round of layoffs will affect full-time staff, contractors, and hourly workers, and is accompanied by the elimination of a production shift at the company's Arizona factory.

Former interim CEO Marc Winterhoff has also departed the company, with the COO position being eliminated as part of a broader restructuring effort under new CEO Silvio Napoli. According to Lucid, the layoffs are expected to generate around $158 million in annualized savings, although the company will incur $32 million in severance and related expenses.

The decision to reduce its workforce and production capacity underscores the challenges Lucid is facing in terms of demand for its vehicles. Despite producing high-quality electric cars, such as the Air and Gravity, the company has struggled to achieve the sales volume needed to support its ambitions.

The upcoming Cosmos crossover, which is expected to start at under $50,000, is seen as a crucial opportunity for Lucid to increase demand and compete with rival manufacturers. The success of this model will be closely watched, as it could determine the future trajectory of the company.

As the automotive industry continues to evolve, Lucid's situation serves as a reminder of the challenges faced by electric vehicle manufacturers in balancing production with demand and adapting to changing market conditions.
