Lexus ES vs Mercedes E-Class: How Smart Shoppers Save $8,000 Without Sacrificing Luxury

Lexus ES vs Mercedes E-Class: How Smart Shoppers Save $8,000 Without Sacrificing Luxury

For luxury car buyers watching their budgets in 2026, the midsize sedan segment still offers real value, if you know where to look. Take the Lexus ES and Mercedes-Benz E-Class, two respected nameplates that cater to similar tastes but differ wildly on price and equipment. A careful comparison reveals that choosing the Japanese sedan over the German icon can put $8,000 back in your pocket while delivering a richer standard features list.

That gap widens to over $13,000 when comparing higher trims like the Lexus ES 500e (or top hybrid) against the Mercedes E450 4Matic.

Performance favors Mercedes hands down. 3 seconds. But for daily driving, the Lexus’s smooth, quiet ride and excellent fuel economy, 48 mpg city in the hybrid versus 25 mpg for the E350, more than compensate. According to EPA data, the ES hybrid also achieves up to 46 mpg combined, while the E-Class manages around 28 mpg.

D. Power’s 2026 Vehicle Dependability Study ranks Lexus first (151 problems per 100 vehicles) and Mercedes 23rd (235 per 100), well below the industry average. CarEdge estimates five-year maintenance costs of roughly $1,960 for the ES versus $3,800 for the E-Class.

Where the Lexus truly pulls ahead is standard luxury content. The ES 350h Luxury trim starts at $55,900, $8,000 less than the base E350’s $63,900, yet includes semi-aniline leather, heated and ventilated front seats, a head-up display, a 17-speaker Mark Levinson audio system, and wireless charging.

The Mercedes charges extra for ventilated seats, premium sound, and a heated steering wheel. For buyers who value everyday comfort, low running costs, and long-term dependability over outright acceleration, the Lexus ES offers the better deal in 2026. As one CarBuzz road tester noted, the ES interior feels cohesive and premium without the heavy price tag.

Smart luxury shoppers will do the math.
