Land Rover Springs a Surprise with Two Electric SUVs on the Way

After years of waiting for Land Rover to deliver its first electric vehicle, the British automaker finally showed something, just not what anyone expected. Instead of fully unveiling the long-anticipated Range Rover Electric, the company offered a sneak peek at a sportier sibling: the Range Rover Sport Electric.
The reveal came in the form of teaser photos from the Goodwood racetrack, where the SUV completed a series of driving challenges. Still, Land Rover kept the powertrain details under wraps.
The Range Rover Sport Electric looks nearly identical to its gas-powered counterpart, with the main differences being a nearly solid front grille (thin pill-shaped slits replace the usual openings) and a rear bumper with no exhaust tips. The matte grey paint and a few EV decals are the only obvious giveaways.
Inside, the cabin is expected to be largely unchanged. Land Rover did say the chassis tuning and audio system have been adjusted to account for the electric powertrain’s weight and the lack of engine noise. The Sport Electric is positioned as a slightly more affordable, on-road-focused alternative to the traditional Range Rover.
Land Rover confirmed it will share full details on both electric SUVs this year. 5 kWh capacity and dual motors producing 542 horsepower. The company had previously slowed its EV development to focus on plug-in hybrids, responding to a dip in electric vehicle demand. Now, with two EVs nearing launch, Land Rover appears to believe the market is picking up.
Still, it faces stiff competition from Cadillac and Mercedes, which already have established flagship electric SUVs.
