Lamborghini’s Design Chief on Chinese Supercars: ‘We Take the Competition’

The rise of Chinese electric hypercars, some packing over 3,000 horsepower, has the automotive world buzzing. But Lamborghini’s head of design, Mitja Borkert, isn’t losing sleep. Speaking at the Goodwood Festival of Speed, Borkert acknowledged the new wave of Asian competitors but made clear that the storied Italian brand is focused on its own game.

“We are a sports car brand, and if you are a sports person you take the competition,” Borkert told CarBuzz. ” The designer, whose credits include the Urus, Huracán EVO, and the Sián FKP37, noted he hasn’t seen any direct copies of Lamborghini’s work yet.

Borkert pointed out that Lamborghini has weathered similar waves before, Japanese brands in the 1980s, Korean brands later, and now Chinese marques like BYD’s Yangwang and Xpeng. He sees the new competition as “enriching the market,” but insists that a Lamborghini’s DNA, its history, its presence, the way it makes people smile, can’t be duplicated.

“A Lamborghini is a Lamborghini,” he said. For a 63-year-old company that once built cars that weren’t expected to be practical, the message is clear: stay disciplined, stay true to your own path, and let the hype machines chase the ghosts.
